I am preparing to decommission our old Exchange 2010 servers and I am taking inventory and documenting what the previous Exchange administrator did. In our environment I noticed a combined E2013 CAS/Mailbox server (we will call it E13CASMBX1) as well as a E2013 CAS only server (we will call E13CASONLY1). Looking at IIS it appears that all of the Exchange Back End sites are configured on the combined server (E13CASMBX1), however, when users connect with their Outlook 2013 clients they are connecting with E13CASONLY1.
My questions are:
1. Is there any advantage to having the CAS/MBX role combined with another CAS server in the environment?
2. Can I remove the CAS role from the MBX server and move it to the CAS-only server safely and how is that done?
The reason for doing this is mainly for my own sense of neatness in the environment. I would prefer to have the servers ONLY perform their intended purpose and not have some mish-mash of roles being on different servers.
Any help is appreciated.
