Post Exchange 2013 migration to office 365 mailbox question.

$

Hello all.

I have a happily migrated Exchange 2013 server to Office 365. It has been working fine for many months. I have left the server in place with DirSync in order to use the hybrid functionality. My question is what can I do with the existing on premises mailboxes now in order to save space? I can’t seem to find any answers to the question on how to just decommission/delete the old mailbox data left over. I want to reclaim all the space used up by the EDB’s on the servers now that everything is up in the cloud.

Thanks for any help on the subject.

Exchange 2013 Calc Question on Input Page?

Hi All,

Its more important to me, please some one help me on this.

We are planning install Exchange 2013 MultiRole server on VMware.

I am using Ex2013 Calc for sizing the hardware. I have the Physical server Core Details and SPECInt2006 rate value of the server.

I have gone trough the below article it says if we going to deploy exchange server in Virtual then we must use the below formula to calculate the CPU and enter core and SPECInt2006 value on Input Page.  is this correct?

if its is correct then what is the purpose of the Role Requirements Results Pane page. Here below i have taken some example of Serve core and SPECInt2006 Value. It shows if i give the Physical server(VM Host) Core and SPECInt value in Input page it give me the Output on  recommended Number of Core per server is 6 and all looks good.

If i follow the formula then it shows very worse. Please let me know what data i have give in input page (Real Host Core and SPECInt value or I have to use the below formula and give the input).

Please don't share any article i have gone trough many articles....

http://blogs.technet.com/b/exchange/archive/2009/11/09/3408737.aspx

X/(N*Y) = per virtual processor SPECInt2006 Rate value

Where X is the SPECInt2006 rate value for the hypervisor host server
Where N = the number of physical cores in the hypervisor host
Where Y = 1 if you will be deploying 1:1 virtual processor-to-physical processor on the hypervisor host
Where Y = 2 if you will be deploying up to 2:1 virtual processor-to-physical processor on the hypervisor host

After Apply Exchange 2013 CU6 New-MoveRequest for Cross-Forest Migration get Error "Recipient isn't a mailbox"

We have to migrate Mailbox in a Cross Forest environment (from Exchange 2007 SP3-RU10 to Exchange 2013).For Account coesistence we already migrate Users/Group via ADMT, excluding Exchange Attribute.

The steps are:

  • Enable-MailUser
  • Prepare-MoveRequest.Ps1
  • New-MoveRequest.

Before to Upgrade to CU6, the migrations steps described above worked fine (Exchange Server 2013 SP1 (alias CU4))

After ugrading we alway get the following error running New-MoveRequest:

New-MoveRequest -Identity "02909" -Remotelegacy -RemoteCredential $RemoteCredentials

-TargetDeliverydomain "old.mycompany.com" -TargetDatabase MBOX2A -RemoteGlobalCatalog "odl_dc.mycompany.local"

–DomainController “new_dc.newdomain.int”-verbose

New-MoveRequest -Identity "user200" -Remotelegacy -RemoteCredential $RemoteCredentials

-TargetDeliverydomain "new.mycompany.com" -TargetDatabase MBOX2A

-RemoteGlobalCatalog "old_dc.mycompany.local" -verbose

Recipient '4309a8a0-9edf-4ad1-991b-89d8d75a1c28' isn't a mailbox.

I have found the below article which is the exact issue that I am having.

https://support.software.dell.com/migration-manager-for-exchange/kb/133684

Is there anyway to get HotFix on this problem. I cannot wait two months fo CU7.

In addition downgrade (e.g. Uninstall CU6 and re-installa SP1) is quite complicate and hard.

Thanks in advance for the any suggestions.

mailbox migration failing after Upgrading CU5 -> CU6

hello fellow readers,

we have an Exchange 2007 (latest needed Patchlevel) / Exchange 2013 CU6 Environment and are now having trouble migrating user mailboxes from the Ex2007 mailbox server to the new Ex2013 server.

migration of the first boxes before applying CU6 went fine and smooth, but now all mailbox moves are stuck with the status "Qeued".

a ps command "get-moverequeststatistics karl.treiber" brings the following

Postfach 'Karl Treiber' wird zurzeit nicht verschoben. + CategoryInfo : InvalidArgument: (karl.treiber:MoveRequestIdParameter) [Get-MoveRequestStatistics], Mana gementObjectNotFoundException + FullyQualifiedErrorId : [Server=SERVERNAME,RequestId=bf51511d-c7b8-4b39-ad60-caa71015cc6c,TimeStamp=10.11.2014 11 :27:29] [FailureCategory=Cmdlet-ManagementObjectNotFoundException] 9B1AC428,Microsoft.Exchange.Management.Recipien tTasks.GetMoveRequestStatistics + PSComputerName : SERVERNAME.DOMAIN.local

i'm guessing that this is correct, as the migration hasn't started yet. in somehow similar threads people suggest putting the BadItemLimit higher, so i tried running ps command "set-moverequest karl.treiber -baditemlimit 9999" bringing the following

'Microsoft.Exchange.MailboxReplicationService.TransactionalRequestJob' auf 'DC.DOMAIN.local' gefunden wurden.
    + CategoryInfo : NotSpecified: (:) [Set-MoveRequest], ManagementObjectNotFoundException+ FullyQualifiedErrorId : [Server=SERVERNAME,RequestId=ab82c24b-7914-4382-8de2-34462d4993b3,TimeStamp=10.11.2014 11

  tTasks.SetMoveRequest+ PSComputerName : SERVERNAME.DOMAIN.local

my guess is, that something is missing in AD - but what? DC replication is checked and working as normal. i looked up the AD object of the user, searchung for Exchange values, finding some connecting to mailbox moves, but none similar to "Microsoft.Exchange.MailboxReplicationService.TransactionalRequestJob".

everything worked in CU5 -> after updating to CU6 we had serious issues with mailbox databases in dirty shutdown and called MS or help. as mentioned here this was a known error and they gave us the hotfix for that. the hotfix seemed to be so "hot" that it fixed the database problem but brought new ones, as the fix seems to not check Exchange installation path, assuming its always c:\Program Files\... (which it is not in our case).

here they suggest to run "setup /preparedomain" again, but i am worried about possible new problems.

has anyone suggestions what to check?

Exchange 2013 Office 365 Hybrid Cloud On-Premise Outlook Connection Problem

$

Hi Everyone,

We are required to migrate FROM the cloud TO an on-premise Exchange 2013 server.  We set up a trial of Office365 and linked our test domain to that account.  The test domain mimics our current domain, but ends in .net instead of .org. We set up a test Exchange 2013 server with a few database servers.  Internally, we can connect without issue (Outlook).  We mapped our test CAS to face the Internet, and can access what we need without issue.  We also set up the Hybrid configuration on both the Exchange 2013 and Office365 servers.  We have validated that DirSync works, and migration can occur up to the cloud and back down to the on-premise server.

Now, here is the issue:

We have our DNS records still pointing to Office365, so when we add an Office365 mailbox to Outlook (internal to the network or outside the network) we see absolutely no issues.  We migrated a mailbox today to our on-premise server, but upon doing so, can no longer connect to, or add, that mailbox to Outlook.  When we put this integration in to effect for production, we want to be able to migrate mailboxes on-premise from the cloud, and we want to make sure users can still access their mailboxes.  This also goes for distribution groups, conference rooms, etc.

I see that most suggestions say to change your DNS record to point to the on-premise Exchange server, which is great, but after doing so Office365 accounts experience the same issue as above.  We NEED to make sure that when we batch migrate, the users DO NOT lose connectivity to their accounts.  We need both Office365 accounts and Exchange on-premise accounts are accessible internally and externally.  As an extra tid-bit, we HAVE configured Outlook Anywhere on Exchange 2013, but see no difference.

Any thoughts on this?  Office365 and Exchange 2013 see eachother and recognize that the hybrid environment is set up good, but it appears we are missing some configurations.  Currently, we have a CNAME record points our autodiscover to autodiscover.outlook.com.

Any help would be MUCH appreciated.  Thanks!

Dan

Exchange 2013 - Unable to uninstall and reinstall

HI all,

I tried to deploy Exchange 2013 with a Exchange 2007 environment but unable to get it to work.  I tried everything but no help so I decided to uninstall and reinstall Exchange 2013.  However, the uninstallation is failed and now I can reinstall and uninstall.  When I try to uninstall from Control Panel, I will get the following error:

Error

An incomplete installation was detected.  Run setup to complete Exchange installation.

When I run Setup, I receive the following error:

Error

Setup previously failed while performing the "Uninstall".  You can't resume setup by performing the action "Install".

Please assist.  Thanks in advance!

searc-adminauditlog did not show any audit report of deleted mailboxes

Scenario:

suddnely i noticed some room mailboxes are not available in exchange server, but im sure they were there nearly a month before.

I used "search-adminauditlog" PS cmdlet with various parameters such as "set-mailbox","remove-mailbox","disable-mailbox" but no where i can find the audit logs specific to those lost mailboxes.

Search-AdminAuditLog -Cmdlets disable-mailbox -StartDate 08/01/2014 -EndDate 11/04/2014 >mailboxaudit_disablemailbox.txt

I beleive the AD account of those room mailboxes were deleted by someone which has indeed deleted the mailboxes from exchange server too, this is the reason why I cant see any audit report for those mailbox's in while im running the above PS cmdlets.

anyone have experienced the same issue and anymore ideas to identify what went wrong with those mailboxes?

Upgrade exchange 2013 from 2003

Hi,

We currently have Domain Controller (DC) 2003 and exchange 2003. We need to upgrade DC to 2012 server standard and exchange 2013 standard by using CodeTwo Exchange Migration.

Can we install Server 2012 to current DC 2003 machine? Can we do the same for exchange 2003 as installing exchange 2013 on top of 2003? Is it work as software version upgrade?

Advantage: Server name and static IP not change

Or

Install new Server 2012 machine and Migrate Active Directory (AD) from server 2003 to server 2012. While this process running, will our exchange 2003 still working?

After successfull of AD migration to 2012, Do we need to migrate Exchange 2013 right away? Thanks

Regards,

Truc

"Permanently Delete" fail in outlook client after setting up the "Archive and Retention Policy" in Exchange 2010

$

In Exchange 2010 server, we have setup a policy under "Default Archive and Retention Policy" as all messages under "Inbox", "Sent Items" and "Deleted Items" will be Permanently Delete after X months.

However, one of our client found that some of the email messages was still found under his "Deleted Items". All other email messages under her outlook client (2010) were successfully deleted according to the policy.

Is there any reason for this exception?

Thank you

Can't connect Outlook to Exchange 2013 during migration

$

I'm in the middle of a migration from Exchange 2007 to Exchange 2013 and have hit a snag that's baffling me. I've been using the excellent instructions at http://www.msexchange.org/articles-tutorials/exchange-server-2013/migration-deployment/planning-and-migrating-small-organization-exchange-2007-2013-part1.html as a template, and they've worked fine for our small organization up until I tried to connect Outlook 2013 to a test mailbox on the new Exchange 2013 server (page 13 of the above article). No matter what I do, it won't connect.

This is a small environment with only a single Exchange server under normal circumstances. Now we have the old 2007 server and the new 2013 server coexisting until the migration is done. Mail flow between the two servers seems to be fine, and I can send and receive mail on the test mailbox using OWA on the 2013 server. I just can't connect Outlook to it.

When I try to create a new Outlook profile for the 2013 mailbox, something odd happens. If I use "EX2013" as the server name, it doesn't find the server or mailbox. (DNS has no problem resolving the server name correctly.) If I type "EX2007" (the old server name) it [i]does[/i] resolve... but it fills in the server name of EX2013.internal-domain.org. It's supposed to fill in a server name of <mailbox GUID>@email-domain.com, but it doesn't. I then get this message: "Cannot start Microsoft Outlook. Cannot open the Outlook window. The set of folders cannot be opened. The attempt to log on to Microsoft Exchange has failed."

If I run test-OutlookWebServices on EX2013, I get failure on the autodiscover test and "skipped" on the remaining ones. Specifically, I get this error:

System.Net.WebException: The remote server returned an error: (401) Unauthorized.
at System.Net.HttpWebRequest.GetResponse()
at
Microsoft.Exchange.Management.SystemConfigurationTasks.ServiceValidatorBase.InternalInvoke()
at
Microsoft.Exchange.Management.SystemConfigurationTasks.ServiceValidatorBase.Invoke()

If I run test-OutlookWebServices on EX2007, I would get the same result until I disabled loopback check (as a test) per the article athttp://support2.microsoft.com/default.aspx?id=896861. With the loopback check disabled on EX2007 I get further, but then there's an error 1013 that says, "[EXPR]-Error when connecting to https://mail.maildomain.com/Rpc received the error The server committed a protocol violation. Section=ResponseStatusLine". This is followed by an error 1017 about contacting the RPC/HTTP service at the same address.

I've disabled IPv6 on the EX2007 server since it has been suggested as a possible culprit in this kind of scenario (seehttps://support.microsoft.com/kb/2794253?wa=wsignin1.0).

I've also tried modifying the hosts file on both the client and EX2013 in an effort to connect to it directly (autodiscover and all internal mail server names pointing to EX2013, bypassing EX2007 altogether), but I get the same result.

Domain names are as follows (modified to protect my client):

Old server: EX2007.internal-domain.org
New server: EX2013.internal-domain.org
E-mail addresses: <user>@email-domain.com
External: mail.external-domain.com

SCP (both servers): https://autodiscover.email-domain.com/autodiscover/autodiscover.xml

Yes, that's three different domain names we're dealing with. It's not my choice to do it that way, but it's what we've got in place. Outlook Anywhere is not being used externally, though, so that simplifies things somewhat.

The following is in the SSL certificate:

mail.external-domain.com (and this is the certificate name)
EX2007.internal-domain.org
EX2013.internal-domain.org
autodiscover.email-domain.com

Internally I have split DNS to point mail.external-domain.com to the EX2007 server. The autodiscover.email-domain.com address points to the EX2007 server, but as I said above, I tried pointing that name to EX2013, and it made no difference I could see.

I figure I must be missing a permissions issue or a domain name mixup somewhere, but nothing I've tried has fixed it, and I've hit a dead end on knowledge base articles and existing answers I've found in support forums. Anybody have any ideas?

Native Exchange 2013 Journaling - Guidance over Storage Planning!

Hi,

We are currently exploring full envelope journaling service using Exchange 2013 with Sharepoint 2013 eDiscovery suite for ALL internal and external messages for a largish enterprise ~40K mailboxes and need to accurately plan storage for the dedicated Journal servers; we have used the standard messagestats powershell script to get send / receive and average message size and have some valid metrics to utilize however there is next to no actual guidance on how to plan storage for journaling published?

My question concerns which metric to use - unique send and receive OR total send / receive figures; I have reached out to some of my default Microsoft contacts and dug into how FE Journaling works under the hood and my understanding is that it is total send / receive for every message would be more valid to plan against?

Any guidance would be great!

Sorry for posting this under Exchange 2013 I couldn't find an Exch 2007 area... but it does apply

Been working on our upgrade / migration to Exchange 2013 and all of a sudden I see I am 4 rollups behind on exchange 2007
- Rollup 11 - cant remove last PF after Exch 2013 migration
- Rollup 12 - vulnerability patch
- Rollup 13 - Allow Exch 2013 edge to subscribe to Exch 2007 Hub
- Rollup 14 - Daylight Savings time updates for Exch 2007 SP3

Are these updates cumulative, will applying 14 take care of them all?
or do I need to run through all of them?

Thanks!

Exhcange 2013 installation error "The local domain needs to be updated", but domainprep has been run

Hello,

A few weeks ago, we ran the necessary /prepareschema /preparead /preparealldomains commands to get our Exhange 2010 Org ready to install Exchange 2013 SP1.  When we tried installing the first server today, we get an error:

[11/14/2014 23:42:02.0466] [1] [REQUIRED] The local domain needs to be updated. You must be a member of the 'Domain Admins' group and 'Organization Management' role group, or 'Enterprise Admins' group to continue.

We verified the ObjectVersion of both the Forest (15844) and Domain (13236), and it appears to be consistent with what you would expect for 2013 SP1.

Anybody have any ideas what could be wrong?

Thanks.

I have a bare metal domain controller/DNS server. (Server 2012)

I also have an Exchange server running in a VM, which is joined to the domain. (also Server 2012)

I installed Active Directory Domain Services, so that the Exchange server can write to AD, and then it asked to promote the server to a Domain Controller.

In addition to the pre-reqs, does the Exchange server require the DNS server role?
