Exchange & AD design

$

hi there,

I've been asked to come up with a design for 2 new schools. They are in separate locations and have the below requirements.

  • They will share an email domain name - e.g newschool.com
  • Student access must be restricted to their area
  • Senior staff will need to access files/folders at both locations
  • There will be local file servers at each school for students, staff and teachers
  • Each site should have its own exchange server.

I am thinking of either:-

1. A single forest with a sub-domain for each site.

2. A single domain restricting access via OUs.

There will be an exchange server in each site and DFS to replicated file shares

Which do you think is best? Or would another design be better?

There are currently 2 separate domains in use at both schools but there are currently not many servers setup.

Cheers,

Huw

Missing info after mailbox is migrated

Hi,

I am working on a migration-project where we migrate mailboxes in one domain (let's call ut a.com) to mailboxes in a new domain (let's call it b.com).The old and new domains are in differens forrests.

I am using the prepare-moverequest script and the migration-functionality in Exchange 2013 to do the migrations. The migration is working fine, the mailboxes are migrated and the user can access the mailbox and read the emails in it from the new domain after migration. BUT I have one problem: After migration the owner of the migrated mailbox cannot reply to old emails from non-migrated users.

Example: User B sends an email to user A before migration, this email is successfully delivered to user A's inbox. Now user A's mailbox is migrated to the new domain and the new Exchange-org. After migration user A can read the original mail from user B, but  he can not reply to it. If he tries to reply, no email-address is associated with user B. But if user A create a new email to user B, this is sent and successfully delivered to user B.

It seems that something happens during the migration so that Outlook does not has the necessary information to reply to the old emails from non-migrated users? As said, I can create a new mail to a non-migrated user or to an external user, and this is delivered successfully.

fixing a User with two folders in different language and after migration the empty one is active

$

During Migration test runs from Exchange 2010 to Exchange 2013 we ran into a problem:

some users appear to have mailboxfolders in different languages like "Deleted Items" and "Verwijderde Items", but not all users an also not all folders for that user

If the "deleted Items" folder was the system folder in EX2010, then after migration that user, being migrated to the new server where the default mailbox setting regional nl-NL, his new DeletedItems system folder is : "Verwijderde Items" but it is empty.

Okay, this is no big deal, all the items can be found in the still existing "Deleted Items" folder, select all items and drag them to the Verwijderde items.... then delete the Deleted items folder (it is no longer a system folder so it CAN be deleted)

But it also happened to a user with his "Calendar" and "agenda": And now his agenda was empty, and on his iPhone after a very short time ALL his appointments were gone. (synchronization) Even more distressing for that user, it happened ALSO to his "Contacts" and "Contacten" : After synchronization he lost all his contacts ; you can imagine this users happy face ?

I Found the script Fix_Mailboxfolders.ps1 and ran it but since the regional setting on ex2010 was also nl-NL it did not work

My last resort was to export his restored old mailbos to a pst and disabled his mailbox, created a new one for him en imported the PST again... problem solved: but now his email UID has changed and ALL his appointments with other users get a "unknown user" message.

SO my question is:

How can I migrate a user who is known to have different foldernames (both dutch and US) and make sure the Dutch folder gets to be the system folder AND has all the items in it from de Us folder, AND the US folder gets deleted?

Anyone with a good powershell knowledge? There are about 100 users with duplicate Foldernames in the wrong language

I know the following arguments:

Mailbox userID, current System Foldername, New System Foldername,. I can run a script Before migration or After.

Upgraded Lotus Notes version into newer 8.5 it has complex functionalities. These functions are not easily graspable and it takes long time to understand, I decide to export my data into another (MS Outlook) platform, is it possible, I want new updates about conversion in cost-effective manner. And if yes then suggests me the way?

Unable to access Exchange 2013 EAC/ECP webpage

Hi All,

Getting extremely frustrated now with a new Exchange 2013 installation on a Windows Server 2012 VM...

After having a lot of problems with the installation (didn't uninstall visual c++ which caused failure, then needed to delete the AD Microsoft Exchange System Objects group due to permission failures, etc) I've now got a fully installed Exchange server. Still, now I cannot figure out how to fix my next problem - Accessing the EAC/ECP.

I've searched every possible web guide/forum thread and the only one which is the same issue I'm having is this one: http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/exchangesvradmin/thread/89c42771-78c9-4d94-88e5-557320eccc71

Unfortunately, as you can see in that thread, it is still unresolved.

Current Issue: trying to access https://localhost/ecp (or any other variation) returns a 404 Not Found.

The error page points the physical path to c:\inetpub\wwwroot\ecp however that folder does not exist. I have tried manually changing the IIS site (Exchange Back End) to point its physical path to C:\Program Files\Microsoft\Exchange Server\V15\ClientAccess\ecp which seems to be valid, however it doesn't work...

Not sure what else to do... HELP!

Wrong Autodiscover Server returned in XML

$

We are trying to migrate to new Exchange 2013 CAS servers, however the autodiscover xml information they handing out still has the old server name in it

X-CalculatedBETarget: old server
X-DiagInfo: old server
X-BEServer: old server
Persistent-Auth: old server
X-FEServer: old server

When we stop the services on the old server as a test Autodiscover fails even though dns etc points to the new server, we are not seeing any other issues, owa etc all works.

If I look at CN=autodiscover in ADSI there is no mention of the old server.

We are migrating from a single server to a loadbalanced pair, what entry should we use to ensure autodiscover doesn't fail in the even one server is down?

Exchange2007&2013 coexistence, with different Exchange 2007 CAS authentication settings

$

During an Exchange 2013 and Exchange 2007 coexistence scenario, there are 2 types of Exchange 2007 CAS servers; one set of Exchange 2007 CAS servers serving OWA for internal clients with Forms based authentication behind an internal reverse proxy requiring forms based authentication and Windows Credentials, second set of Exchange 2007 CAS servers serving OWA and ActiveSync for external clients with Windows Integrated Authentication behind a DMZ located reverse proxy requiring forms based authentication and pre-authentication using SecureID.

When introducing Exchange 2013 CAS servers, plan is to to have 2 IPs and 2 web sites on the Exchange 2013 CAS, each handling authentication of OWA differently depending on if the originating traffic is external or internal, so removing the internal reverse proxy - though keeping the external reverse proxy with pre-authentication. Now, how do I ensure that the proxied (AutoD, EWS) and redirected (OWA) traffic from Exchange CAS 2013 to 2007 is sent to the applicable Exchange 2007 CAS server (i.e. depending on whether traffic is originating externally or internally). As Exchange 2013 doesn’t know the difference of IIS authentication settings of the Exchange 2007 CAS servers, users might occationally get a authentication pop up.

Thanks

Setting up AnywhereAccess behind ARR IIS Server

$

I have an IIS ARR server which points back to my exchange server. OWA and ECP work perfectly fine.

I have set it up with the following guide:

http://blogs.technet.com/b/exchange/archive/2013/07/19/reverse-proxy-for-exchange-server-2013-using-iis-arr-part-1.aspx

The only thing that is not working is Outlook connectivity (both internally and externally).

I get the following error message on the MS connectivity test:

--------------

RPC Proxy can't be pinged.

Additional Details
An unexpected network-level exception was encountered. Exception details:
Message: The remote server returned an error: (401) Unauthorized.Type: Microsoft.Exchange.Tools.ExRca.Extensions.MapiTransportException

--------------

I tested the exchange server direct (i.e. without ARR) and it works as expected. I think it has something to do with the credentials not being passed between ARR and the exchange server because if I am on the local network, I can go straight to the exchange server / rpc (via https://servername/rpc) and it prompts for credentials once and gives me a blank page (expected) whereas if I go via ARR it prompts for credentials but doesn't accept them (just prompts again and again and again).

Anyone manage to fix this issue?

Thanks.

Hi I'm new to PowerShell and I've been attempting to migrate an Exchange 2010 SP3 Public folder to Exchange 2013. I'm following the directions found athttp://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/jj150486(v=exchg.150).aspx .

Exchange 2013 Outlook Anywhere connection issues when using F5 VIP

$

Hello,

We are in the process of deploying Exchange 2013 into our Exchange 2010 Org.  We are using an F5 to load balance all services. We are doing some initial testing and have not cut over autodiscover or other URLs yet to 2013.  We are using host files on the local testing machines to point the URLs to 2013.    OWA, Activesync, ecp work with no issue through the F5 VIP.   However, we are having issues with Outlook.  If our host file entries point to a single server, Outlook functions normally.  If the host file entries point to the F5 VIP, it keeps prompting for creds and will never connect.

Just wondering if anybody has run into this or has any guidance as far as OA and F5 deployment.

Thanks

Hi There,

I am planning to introduce New exchange 2013 Enviroment CAS and MBX servers ,in my existing 2010 server, right now i have CAS array which has 3 CAS server (Exch 2010) now my plan is to install a 2013 CAS servers and build a new CAS array and add both the new 2013 CAS servers to the new CAS array and then start moving mailbox from 2010 to 2013 servers.

So my question is can i have 2 CAS Array in same AD site without effecting my mailbox migration process anytime and also if migrated mailbox on 2013 has access to Mailbox on 2010 (auto mapped in outlook) will have any issues??

Introducing Exchange 2013 into environment with Exchange 2010 and remnants of Exchange 2003?

$
0
0

Hello,

Looking for some guidance. Scenario (using fictitious DNS names):

  • Two separate entities, part of a single conglomerate
  • Single forest, empty root, 2 child domains DomA.org and DomB.org
  • DomA was previously using Exchange 2003, which is still operational but doesn't host active mailboxes
  • DomB had Exchange 2010 deployed and mailboxes + PFs were moved from DomA (E2K3) to DomB (E2K10)
  • DomA external SMTP namespace was OLDDOMAIN.ORG
  • NEWDOMAIN.ORG external SMTP namespace was created for Exchange 2010 deployment and it became primary SMTP address; OLDDOMAIN became secondary
  • Anything addressed to NEWDOMAIN.ORG is routed via E2K10.
  • OLDDOMAIN.ORG is still routed via E2K3

For various reasons, management wants to bring back the mailboxes that were previously hosted in DomA.org (OLDDOMAIN.ORG) to their original home:

  • DomB will keep the existing Exchange 2010 installation with the mailboxes associated with this entity
  • DomA should be upgraded to the latest version of Exchange, without disrupting DomB's operations. Exchange 2013 is desired, however, Exchange 2010 will be acceptable as well.
  • Namespace NEWDOMAIN.ORG will remain with DomB
  • OLDDOMAIN.ORG will be re-assigned to DomA, once Exchange infrastructure is ready

Questions are:

  • Should Exchange 2003 infrastructure in DomA be fully de-commissioned and cleaned out of AD before Exchange 2013 is introduced?
  • Because NEWDOMAIN.ORG has to remain available for users that are being moved back (in case anyone replies to messages sent while NEWDOMAIN.ORG was primary SMTP) - what are the caveats of CAS to CAS routing between Exchange 2010 and 2013?
  • Should the load balancer be pointed at 2013 or 2010 CAS servers if NEWDOMAIN.ORG will still be routed via DomB's infrastructure?
  • What would be the implications of this "divorce" for the SSL certs (all are SAN certs- e.g. expen$ive if must be re-issued)

Any other tips are greatly appreciated!

Thanks in advance.

mailbox migration failing after Upgrading CU5 -> CU6

$

hello fellow readers,

we have an Exchange 2007 (latest needed Patchlevel) / Exchange 2013 CU6 Environment and are now having trouble migrating user mailboxes from the Ex2007 mailbox server to the new Ex2013 server.

migration of the first boxes before applying CU6 went fine and smooth, but now all mailbox moves are stuck with the status "Qeued".

a ps command "get-moverequeststatistics karl.treiber" brings the following

Postfach 'Karl Treiber' wird zurzeit nicht verschoben. + CategoryInfo : InvalidArgument: (karl.treiber:MoveRequestIdParameter) [Get-MoveRequestStatistics], Mana gementObjectNotFoundException + FullyQualifiedErrorId : [Server=SERVERNAME,RequestId=bf51511d-c7b8-4b39-ad60-caa71015cc6c,TimeStamp=10.11.2014 11 :27:29] [FailureCategory=Cmdlet-ManagementObjectNotFoundException] 9B1AC428,Microsoft.Exchange.Management.Recipien tTasks.GetMoveRequestStatistics + PSComputerName : SERVERNAME.DOMAIN.local

i'm guessing that this is correct, as the migration hasn't started yet. in somehow similar threads people suggest putting the BadItemLimit higher, so i tried running ps command "set-moverequest karl.treiber -baditemlimit 9999" bringing the following

'Microsoft.Exchange.MailboxReplicationService.TransactionalRequestJob' auf 'DC.DOMAIN.local' gefunden wurden.
    + CategoryInfo : NotSpecified: (:) [Set-MoveRequest], ManagementObjectNotFoundException+ FullyQualifiedErrorId : [Server=SERVERNAME,RequestId=ab82c24b-7914-4382-8de2-34462d4993b3,TimeStamp=10.11.2014 11
   :38:01] [FailureCategory=Cmdlet-ManagementObjectNotFoundException] 285DB966,Microsoft.Exchange.Management.Recipien
  tTasks.SetMoveRequest+ PSComputerName : SERVERNAME.DOMAIN.local

my guess is, that something is missing in AD - but what? DC replication is checked and working as normal. i looked up the AD object of the user, searchung for Exchange values, finding some connecting to mailbox moves, but none similar to "Microsoft.Exchange.MailboxReplicationService.TransactionalRequestJob".

everything worked in CU5 -> after updating to CU6 we had serious issues with mailbox databases in dirty shutdown and called MS or help. as mentioned here this was a known error and they gave us the hotfix for that. the hotfix seemed to be so "hot" that it fixed the database problem but brought new ones, as the fix seems to not check Exchange installation path, assuming its always c:\Program Files\... (which it is not in our case).

here they suggest to run "setup /preparedomain" again, but i am worried about possible new problems.

has anyone suggestions what to check?

Mailbox migration 2010 SP3 to 2013 error

We have a migration problem, a single 2010 server with all the roles migrating to 2013 with separate CAS and DB roles. Approx 50% of mailboxes are getting stuck and reporting "Transient error MapiExceptionNetworkError has occurred. The system will retry (1/60)" and "Relinquishing job because the mailbox is locked".

I have tried restarting the services suggested in another thread (Mailbox Migration Service and Search) but it makes no difference.

Any suggestions?
