Slow Virtual Directories response in 2007/2013 Coexistence

$

We are running Exchange 2007 and 2013 in coexistence mode and have reach the point of updating internal and external URLs for virtual directories. I managed to change some but have some issues I have noticed:

  1. Updating virtual directories is extremely slow! Taking 30 minutes to an hour when using either the shell or GUI. Owa virtual directory in particular takes ages to load authentication properties! I tried to change to forms-based authentication with username only but after waiting almost an hour, it seems the change did not take effect. I still see the first option selected (Use one or more standard authentication methods) but this time the default “Integrated Windows authentication” was not selected.
  2. After trying to change the authentication method to forms-based authentication (which from what it looks didn’t work well), I tried to logon a user in 2013, it logged on successfully but in the legacy interface.

I installed Exchange Server 2013 SP1 and Server 2007 SP3 RU10. I have My CAS and Mailbox roles are virtualised in one physical machine.

I have checked this (https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/jj907309(v=exchg.150).aspx) site and been wondering if I should go ahead a run these updates. Please advise on the 2 issues above and whether I should also install the updates.

2010 Public Folder Migration to 2013 : 19,000+ folder

Hello,

I have inherited an enormous 2010 public folder environment.  There are nearly 19,000 public folders which about 60% of them are mail-enabled. I have managed to migrate all users over to Exchange 2013 however I am struggling on an approach to move the 2010 Public folders over to 2013.

I have looked at that various Microsoft migration scripts available however, since there is no major rush to get this moved over and I want to attempt to run the 2010 environment alongside the 2013 public folder environment. My initial plan is to first identify which folders are no longer needed and archive/remove them from the 2010 environment.

Couple areas of concern:

  1.  How do I replicate the structure in 2013 to match the existing environment? Below is a screen show if what our 2010 environment looks like.

As you can see we have two main folders.  Active Project and Archive Projects. Below those we have client separated out alphabetically.  Under the client folder we then have the assign project number.  This is the folder that gets mail enabled.

In Exchange 2013 I see that public folder reside in Public Folder Mailboxes. I ran the PublicFolderToMailboxMapGenerator.ps1 but my concern is what the structure will look like to the user. I am assuming I can follow my same structure and it’s just a matter of pointing to the various databases I have assigned for public folder data.

2.  If I take the manual approach and slowly migrate these over to Exchange 2013, which will require me to Mail-Disable the existing Public Folder, create the Folder in Exchange 2013 and Mail Enable it, would my users who mailboxes all reside in the 2013 environment be able to see both Public Folder Environments with Outlook 2010 and Outlook 2013? Even if they had to resort to using OWA to access to 2013 Environment I would be ok with that. I just need them to have access to them if needed.

3.  If I recall, the first public folder created in exchange 2013 holds the hierarchy information. What is the best approach for this.  Since my first folder in my 2010 environment is “Active Projects” do I want to create a “dummy” folder so it is just responsible for the hierarchy information or just proceed with creating the “Active projects” folder and run with that?

Look forward to any suggesting or input on this migration attempt.

Thank You

Exchange 2013 ECP login looping

Hi all.  I am having issue login to the Exchange 2013 ECP portal.  Originally our environment has one Exchange 2013 with SP1 server.  So we've create one more Exchange 2013 server running on SP1 and Rollup Update 11.  Then configured DAG and move the database into the DAG.  However, I am not able to login to the ECP portal of this new server at https://server_name/ecp. The odd thing is I can login to OWA through the URL https://server_name/owa, but just not the ECP portal.  After I entered my AD user name and password (or other domain admin account), it keep prompting me back to the EP login screen.  There is no error messages at all.  ECP and OWA access is fine on the old Exchange 2013 server.

I've checked the virtual directories, IIS permission, and they are identical to the old Exchange 2013 server.  It is running on a SAN certificate, and not signed with the provider is "Microsoft RSA SChannel Cryptographic Provider"

Since this server is now in production, I didn't restart the IIS service.  I also don't want to re-create the ECP and OWA virtual directories at this moment as the OWA is working fine.  I am just wondering is there other things I can try.  Thank you

Exchange 2013 hybrid multiple smtp domains autodiscover

$

We currently have Exchange 2013 on-premises with contoso.com as our accepted smtp domain
Our MX and autodiscover.contoso.com DNS records point to on-premises Exchange 2013
Users with on-premises Exchange 2013 mailbox have UPN contoso.com in on-premises Active Directory
We have mail enabled public folders.

Next to this we have mail users that have no mailbox in our Active Directory, with mail address coworkers.contoso.com and also UPN coworkers.contoso.com
The smtp domain coworkers.contoso.com is not an accepted or relay domain in our on-premises Exchange 2013, Exchange environment does not know this smtp domain

Next to this we have an Office 365 tenant.
The smtp domain coworkers.contoso.com is added to this Office 365 tenant.
We sync the mail users with DirSync to Office 365 and assign an E3 license and thus these mail users have a mailbox in Office 365 and are know as mail user in Exchange 2013 and not remote mailbox.
MX and autodiscover.coworkers.contoso.com DNS records point to Office 365.

Now we want to setup hybrid for contoso.com and also coworkers.contoso.com to the Office 365 tenant
- i will add contoso.com to Office 365 tenant
- i will add coworkers.contoso.com as accepted domain in Exchange 2013
- run the HCW with contoso.com as smtp domain selected for hybrid
- run autodiscover domain feature (autod) and add coworkers.contoso.com as additional smtp domain
- rerun HCW with contoso.com and coworkers.contoso.com smtp domains selected for hybrid
- run the powershell commands on http://www.msexchange.org/articles-tutorials/office-365/exchange-online/match-office-365-mailbox-new-premises-user-hybrid-deployment.html to make the coworkers.contoso.com mail users known as remote mailboxes in on-premises Exchange 2013
- sync mail enabled public folders to Office 365

Questions
- all mail users that have mail address coworkers.contoso.com are already in the cloud and autodiscover.coworkers.contoso.com points to Office 365, can we leave it like this or should autodiscover.coworkers.contoso.com point to on-premises?
- if we need to switch autodiscover.coworkers.contoso.com to on-premises when do we need to do this?
- activesync devices of coworkers.contoso.com users are now configured via autodiscover.coworkers.contoso.com that points to office 365 if we switch autodiscover.coworkers.contoso.com to on-premises does this have impact and if yes, whats the impact?
- can we first run HCW for contoso.com test and run later HCW with coworkers.contoso.com and leave autodiscover for contoso.com point to on-premises Exchange and coworkers.contoso.com to Office 365?

Exchange 2010 - EWS and disabling TLS 1.0

$

Hi all,

Due to the POODLE vulnerability and TLS 1.0 showing as enabled on one of our external scans, we were informed that we would need to disable SSL 3.0 and TLS 1.0 on our Exchange server.

Apparently, this wouldn't even be possible until Update Rollup 9 was released on 3/16/15:

Rollup resolves:

KB 3029667 SMTP is not transported over TLS 1.1 or TLS 1.2 protocol in an Exchange Server 2010 environment

After installing this update, SSL 3.0 and TLS 1.0 were disabled and the servers rebooted (cross site, same domain, two Exchange servers).  After resolving some issues with certificates that apparently broke as a result of the changes, we found that EWS was not working - the log full of these errors:

Process 5776: ProxyWebRequest CrossSite from S-1-5-21-3895483984-2032760896-3917300074-1259 tohttps://mail.exchange.com:443/ews/exchange.asmx failed. Caller SIDs: NetworkCredentials. The exception returned is Microsoft.Exchange.InfoWorker.Common.Availability.ProxyWebRequestProcessingException: System.Net.WebException: The underlying connection was closed: An unexpected error occurred on a send. ---> System.IO.IOException: Unable to read data from the transport connection: An existing connection was forcibly closed by the remote host.

------------------------------------------------------

The EWS directory in IIS on both servers are set to use Anonymous and Windows Authentication.  The main issues observed outside of the above errors was that free/busy information could not be viewed.

After rebuilding the EWS virtual directory and a couple reboots later, we tried enabling TLS 1.0 on both servers, rebooted, and there were no more EWS errors to be found - free/busy was also working.

So it appears that although this rollup allows SMTP to use TLS 1.1 or 1.2, EWS is still attempting to use TLS 1.0, and I don't see that it is possible to change this

RPC Proxy doesn't work: 2013/2010 Co-Existence with Outlook Anywhere

ISSUE: Can't RPC Proxy Outlook Anywhere requests for Exchange 2010 mailbox users via the Exchange 2013 CAS.

SYMPTOMS: Externally with TestExchangeConnectivity.com, I get 'RPC Proxy Can't Be Pinged' with 'An HTTP 401 Unauthorized response was received from the remote Unknown server'.

SETUP:

Exchange 2013 CU2
Get-OutlookAnywhere Details:
ExternalHostname: webapp.mydomain.com
InternalHostname: ex2013.mydomain.local
ExternalClientAuthenticationMethod: Basic
InternalClientAuthenticationMethod: Ntlm
IISAuthenticationMethods: Basic, Ntlm, Negotiate
SSLOffloading: False

Certificate on 2013 server contains the names: ex2013.mydomain.local, webapp.mydomain.com, AutoDiscover.mydomain.local, AutoDiscover.mydomain.com, mydomain.local, mydomain.com

Exchange 2010 SP3 update rollup 1
Get-OutlookAnywhere Details:
ExternalHostname: webapp.mydomain.com
ClientAuthenticationMethod: Basic
IISAuthenticationMethods: Basic, Ntlm
SSLOffloading: False

Certificate on 2010 server contains the names: ex2010.mydomain.local, webapp.mydomain.com, autodiscover.mydomain.local, autodiscover.mydomain.com

Outlook providers:
EXCH  CertPrincipalName: msstd:webapp.mydomain.com
EXPR  CertPrincipalName: msstd:*.mydomain.com    (as I use an external reverse proxy with a public wildcard certificate)

ADDITIONAL DETAILS:
- With the above settings, Outlook 2010 doesn't seem to be able to proxy RPC through Exchange 2013.

Testing manually with RPCPING utility:
- Requests for port 6001 directed to Exchange 2010 for people with mailbox on Exchange 2010: works correctly
- Requests for port 6001 directed to Exchange 2013 for people with mailbox on Exchange 2013: works correctly
- Requests for port 6001 directed to Exchange 2013 for people with mailbox on Exchange 2010: error 401.1 Unauthorized

OWA and Activesync through Exchange 2013 for people with mailbox on Exchange 2010 are working fine.
Only RPC over HTTP seems to have problems.

Trying to upgrade the Exchange 2013 Management Tools on my Win 10 system from CU 6 to CU 11. Thought I'd get creative and run

Setup.exe /Role:ManagementTools /IAcceptExchangeServerLicenseTerms

It ran for awhile and then threw this error:

[ERROR] Please select at least one server role to install. Make sure that the specified roles aren't already installed.

Huh?

Well, I thought I'd uninstall CU 6. Big mistake. New error

[ERROR] An incomplete installation was detected.  Run setup to complete Exchange installation.

Now I can remove or reinstall. Any tips on how to get around this one?

We a have a customer who are using post-fix mail server as of now and they are merging process with an organization having exchange 2010. The scenario is like using active directory of first organization and email system with exchange 2010. Now we have to do is migrate all active directory objects to first organization which seems fine with ADMT Tool. But to migrate users and distribution groups form post-fix to Exchange 2010 has become little challenging. Could anybody help me out on this?

We just updated all of our Exchange servers to Exchange 2013 CU 10 (previously on CU7) and I am trying to upgrade my admin tools on my computer (Windows 10). I am doing an unattended install from the command line by running the command "setup.exe /m:upgrade /IAcceptExchangeServerLicenseTerms". The process fails when it tries to disable the services. Essentially it is failing on disabling the "Application Identity" service. When trying to disable that service, I get an Access Denied error no matter what I do. Even booting into Safe Mode to disable the service gives me access denied. Any ideas on how I can get around this?

Logging into localhost/ecp not working - HTTP 500 Internal Server Error

Hi all,

I've been having an issue logging into localhost/ecp. When I enter it in my browser, it redirects me to localhost/owa. I enter my login info anyway, and it takes a while to load until it eventually fails and gives me an "HTTP 500 Internal Server Error" message on the tab in IE.

I've tried searching for many fixes but nothing seems to be working.

This is a clean install of Exchange Server 2016 on Windows Server 2012 R2. I've installed Exchange 2016 once before in a Hyper-V just like the one I am on now, and I've never had this problem. Sadly, I had to start fresh because that Hyper-V machine failed so I'm just really confused why localhost/ecp doesn't work anymore or what could have caused it. Does any one have any suggestions?

I've setup our Exchange 2013 in hybrid mode with Office 365. I'm able to migrate mailboxes to Office 365 just fine and I can create new mailboxes from the Exchange 2013 ECP by choosing "Office 365 mailbox" just fine, but my co-worker who already has rights to create mailboxes does not see the option to create Office 365 mailboxes.

My user account is part of the domain admins group, my co-worker does not have those permissions.

What permissions or roles are we missing?

HI,

I have Couple of questions regarding Exchange 2010 decommissioning. We have moved all the users to exchange 2013 everything is working fine namespace, mail flow. So before decommissioning 2010.

Question 1.

I have some accepted domain configured on exchange 2010. Do i need to make those accepted domain on exchange 2013 before decommissioning 2010,  OR it will give carry over to 2013 by itself.

Question 2.

I have transport rules in 2010, before decommsion i have to make all those transport rules into exchange 2013.

Question 3.

We have configure federation trust on exchange 2010. Do I need to create federation trust on Exchange 2013 before decommissioning 2010 from our environment.

Please help me any other nitty gritty things, I need to make sure before decommissioning.

Thank you very much in advance for every input.
