Configuration and UIpgrading Domain Controllers

I have been working for our organization for about 5 months now.  Exchange is one of the elements that I have kind of avoided tinkering with as it works but I can tell there is something a little off. I was asked to build a windows 2012R2 Domain controller to take over our PDC, FSMO, GC, DNS, DHCP and Certificate Authority Roles. As I thought this is quite the task to undertake without really having a grasp on how things were previously built here. Documentation does not exist and several technologies have been custom rigged to work in our environment.  At times I am impressed with the creativity.  Other times I am frustrated by the unintended side effects. This may be one of those times.

All of the mentioned services except Certificate Authority (we do not have one) run on the DC we plan to retire. We also have a 64-bit Server 2008 R2 running Exchange 2010 Standard. I successfully built a 64-bit Server 2012 R2 Standard server and promoted it to a Domain controller with DNS using the post installation tools.  After transferring the FSMO and adding the global catalog role to my new DC I was ready to start slowly transferring the other roles and decommissioning the services left on the old DC.

Long story short Exchange crashed.  I backed out and re-migrated back the FSMO and GC roles to the old DC. Exchange came back up and I have done some further investigation. Our Domain was Server 2000 functional level and was raised to server 2003 functional level (we have a second server 2003 DC not GC) before the new DC was built. It seems our exchange 2010 standard server had static global catalog references that caused the exchange AD Topology service to crash when the transfer happened. I wonder if this was done as Exchange 2010 was not supposed to work with server 2000 functional level.

My request is for anyone to point me to simple documentation that will help me do two things.

  1. Ensure my exchange server is configured correctly before I start moving domain roles around.
  2. Provide me with a checklist of things to do to ensure exchange will work after the roles are all migrated.

Thank you for your help. I am really enjoying this project but since this is a live production environment I do not want to simply experiment until I get it right.

DNS Setup for migration from Exchange 2010 to Exchange 2013

$

I am planning the migration of our existing Exchange 2010 setup to Exchange 2013. My concern is with the right way to setup DNS names.  I have a single server fulfilling all roles at present and all users use online access only (no cached mailboxes).

Existing 2010 server

Machine name - ex1.domain.local

Internal name - ex1.domain.local

External name - exc.external.org.uk

New Server

The new server will need, eventually, to use exc.external.org.uk externally (which is easily enough achieved after migration).

Obviously the new server needs to start with ex2.domain.local as it's machine name but when I install Exchange 2013 and migrate mailboxes, how will users' Outlook find the new server?

Many thanks

Jay Rubinstein

2007 SP3 to 2013 Migration -> Public Folders Migration (-2147467259)

Hi Guys

I'm currently undertaking an Exchange 2007 SP3 to Exchange 2013 migration, and all has been going swimmingly so far.  We've moved all mailboxes across and are at the final stages and just want to move the public folders across.

I've been following the instructions in: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/jj150486(v=exchg.150).aspx this article, and we have gotten up to stage 5 (Start the Migration Request).  The process gets around 20% of the way through, and from what we can tell seems to migrate all content from PF folders, however it then stops.  I've posted an extract of the log below, which should show you the error we're currently getting (it tries then exhausts retries & stops).

I've attempted to find some solutions, and searching for the respective error codes has suggested a couple of ideas, such as not being a PF Admin (checked), resource issues on source/destination servers (checked, and restarted for good measure), I saw mention of a problem with NETBIOS resolution so added the source server into the host files (checked).

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated

Cheers

When configuring hybrid section in Exchange 2013, I got stuck when I reach the section "choose a certificate to use with securing hybrid mail transport"

The drop-down list is empty. (I'm using a wildcard Digicert SSL)

Any idea?

Exchange 2010 Resource Forest - Autodiscover

Environment:

Account Forest (No Exchange server installed)

Resource Forest (Exchange 2010 SP3)

I understand that a SCP record can be created in the account forest using the following command:  Export-AutoDiscoverConfig -DomainController <FQDN> -TargetForestDomainController <String> -TargetForestCredential $a -MultipleExchangeDeployments $true

Questions:

1.  Do I need to prep the schema in the Account Forest to create the relevant Exchange configuration before running Export-AutoDiscoverConfig?

2.  Is the switch MultipleExchangeDeployments $true needed?  Technet states that it's only needed if both forests contain Exchange but also states it's needed formultiple accepted email domains? (which we do have)  http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa998832(v=exchg.141).aspx3.

3. Can this change be backed out.  i.e. can the SCP record be removed by using ADSI edit.

Thanks in advance

I will deploy 04 servers with exchange 2013 multroles in my organization, I will create a digital certificate with external name webmail.empresa.com and autodiscover.empresa.com, but the internal URL's need to put the name of the server digital certificate? Or change the internal URL's with same external name?

what is Set-TransportConfigs switch to set the large emails setting?

When I did a migration of a mailbox, I ran into the following error 'Exchange 2013 error code -2146233088 - Exceeded Maximum Number of Large Items'. After some searching I found following post describing fix and error. It is claimed that you can alter the size defined as 'large email' (35 mb for office365, don't know what it is for exchange 2013), through the set-transportconfig cmdlet.  anybody able to point me to how? What switch?

Getting REAL frustrated installing Exchange 2013. Tried to install MSDN Exchange 2013 and then update it with CU3 and that failed all over the place with exceptions.

So I am trying to install a "fresh" CU2 installation from command line and it goes quite a long way in the setup and then fails at  Mailbox Role: Mailbox service. Fails trying to mount the database with "The Exchange server for the database object "Mailbox Database 0637172224" wasn't found in Active Directory Domain Services. The object may be corrupted."

As previously mentioned I did a complete error free install with MSDN 2013, no problems. Previous to CU2 install I installed all prerequisites, setup/ps, setup/PreapreAD, setup /pd.

Done searching for answers as this is gotten to be more than a headache. The goal here is to migrate Exchange 2007 to 2013 and I need at least CU2.

Any idea's???

Autodiscover after deploying Exchange 2013 CAS in a Exchange 2007 organization

I am deploying Exchange 2013 CAS in a Exchange 2007 organization. Will all the clients be directed to the Exchange 2013 CAS servers for autodiscover. Will there be any issue with outlook clients connecting to their mailbox servers in Exchange 2007

Autodiscover and certificates on Exchange 2013 - how to avoid Certificate error

$

We are getting the common security alert about autodiscover.domain.com not matching the name on the certificate.

All virtual directory URL's - internal and external - are configured to owa.domain.com.  I tried to set the autodiscover.domain.com to be a cname for owa.domain.com, thinking it would redirect to the proper host and certificate, but that didn't work.

I found several postings about the URLs, such as here:
http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/exchange/en-US/d1ac9721-7666-4856-9b0c-52315d56507e/exchange-2013-the-name-of-the-security-certificate-is-invalid-or-does-not-match-the-name-of-the?forum=exchangesvrclients

How should the autodiscover.domain.com be set in order to get this to work without the error?

Thank you!

Need to add EDGE 2010 to Exchange 2013 Organization

I have a Exchange 2007 Organization and I am planning to Migrate to Exchange 2013 with one CAS and one Mailbox servers. I also want to have a Exchange 2010 EDGE server for Exchange 2013 servers. 1. What is the sequence of installing the servers including 2010 EDGE. 2. Should I do Exchange 2010 Schema update before doing Exchange 2013 Schema update since I am deploying Exchange 2010 as EDGE (I understand it wont be part of AD but want to know if EDGE sync will be affected if I dont do Exchange 2010 Schema update) .

Confused about DAG setup

$

I been running an Exchange 2007 single copy cluster for a few years, so I'm experienced in setting up MS clusters in an Exchange environment.  Now, I'm playing with Exchange 2013 in my lab environment and I have 2 Exchange 2013 cas/mailbox servers and I setup the DAG and it's working, but I'm confused about the setup.  Here are my questions (all of my reading about dag setups doesn't seem to answer my questions)

  • Before I setup my DAG, I pre-staged my CNO computer object I called it DAG1.  I also created a DNS A record for this AD object, and added a static address let's say 192.168.1.4 .   Again, since this is going to be a cluster computer object, I'm assuming it needs to have a static IP as well, is that correct?  I'm falling back on my 2007 cluster experience as thinking this is just like a 2007 CMS (cluster mailbox server object), is my thinking correct?  So now I have pre-staged computer object called DAG1 with a static IP and DNS A record.
  • Using Exchange 2013 ECP console I create the DAG, I'm falling back on my cluster knowledge, and say to myself when I name this DAG it has to be the same name as the CNO object I pre-staged. Is this corect?  So I name my DAG, DAG1.  Again, I'm thinking this is the same as Exchange 2007 CMS (cluster mailbox server).
  • I also add my file share witness, no errors everything is fine.

Now my confusion comes in as to what IP address I need to add to the DAG.

  • Do I have to add the IP address of my CNO object I created DAG1, in my example 192.168.1.4 and I'm done? Since I'm using my primary nic card in each exchange server for both mapi and replication traffic?
  • Am I confusing the 2 and the CNO object, has nothing to do with the IP addresses added to the DAG?
  • Assuming both my exchange serves are on the same subnet, do I just add an available IP?  If I do, does this IP require a host name?

Hopefully someone understands my confusion..  Thanks!

Unable to run export-mailbox cmdlet.

Trying to run the following:

Get-MailboxDatabase MAILDB-01 | Export-Mailbox –PSTFolderPath C:\Backup\ -Confirm $false

But getting error that the cmdlet "export-mailbox" is not recognized.

I've added the role for import export and i can export single mailboxes, but running the above command wont work.

What i'm trying to achieve is to extract all mailboxes from the DB to psts instead, this needs to be done for backup purposes.

If this command is obsolete, is there any other way to achieve this?

Exchange 2007 to 2013 Public Folder Migration - Have to set -DefaultPublicFolderMailbox to primary Hierarchy mailbox?

$

Hey All,

I have just gone through my 3rd attempt at migrating public folders - each time thinking it was just broken.

Basically i have 8 public folder mailboxes after my migration.

I've found that each users DefaultPublicFolderMailbox attribute is set to a random Public Folder Mailbox (1 to 8)

If it is set to the primary  Hierarchy mailbox (Mailbox1) the folder structure looks fine, if it's set to anything else it's as if there is no folder structure, and all folders are in the root directory.. it's very strange - everything looks messed up.

I've followed 2 guides from microsoft on how to migrate this 3 times now.

Can i just set everyones DefaultPublicFolderMailbox to Mailbox1 (The Primary Hierarchy) and be done with it? or is something not right.

Thanks

After moving replicas the public folder instance is populated in both SBS2003 and SBS2011

Hello,

After moving replicas (set to urgent), the public folder instance is populated in both SBS2003 and SBS2011 and usually it will remove them from the 2003 server but this time they are in both places. Can I continue on with my migration or will this cause issues?

SBS 2008 to Office 365 Migration

I was advised to post here from Office 365.

I am trying to migrate a SBS 2008 server to office 365 for mail.

The mail currently works fine from the onsite exchange server and for users working remotely.

When I try to do the cut over migration I get an error saying it cant connect to the exchange server and I should try the outlook connectivity tester to make sure its working fine.

Once I specify the server and username and password it all connects fine apart from the SSL certificate with the error:

The certificate chain couldn't be built. You may be missing required intermediate certificates.

From what I can understand this is down to it being self signed from the sbs server. But the connecting to the server still comes back as its fine so it should work on the 365 migration page?

What am I doing wrong for this not to work?

On another side note.. As they have a lot of mailboxes I wanted to do a Staged-Migration to only upload the mailboxes I want. I then want to decommission the onsite exchange server and just use 365 for user accounts and passwords. How would you go about switching to this? / Would it be a better option?

Benefit of Virtualized Exchange

$

My end goal is to install exchange 2013 either virtualized on server 2012 core with native hyper-v or on a physical server with server2012. With exchange 2013 being such a "hoss" of a program, i am trying to understand the benefits of virtualizing exchange 2013. With the current procedure of:

-install server 2012 core and configure core install, along with hyper-v role and hyper-v management tools

-config new vm (config nic's, storage, ram, processors.......) and install server 2012 on that vm

-install exchange 2013 on that full server 2012 vm

With all that installation and configuring, i don't see the benefit to installing exchange in a virtualized environment opposed to installing exchange on a physical server. Can someone tell me the benefit or maybe i have the process wrong?

Outlook 2010 setup needs to resolve user accounts from wrong exchange server

We migrated from Exchange 2007 to Exchange 2013. It seems when I setup a new Outlook 2010 profile, it needs to still resolve to the old server name to get the account information. Basically, I put the old server name in (oldserver.domain.local) and then it automatically changes it to the new server name (DNS name to be exact) (newserver.domain.local), everything works fine. If I try to setup a fresh profile using either the GUID or DNS name of the new server, it fails and tells me the server is offline. I'm a little concerned because I need to decommission the old exchange 2007 server. I have no idea why this would be happening. Autodiscover.xml shows the new server info. All connections from the client show new server info. I have an SRV for autodiscover. I also have an A record for autodiscover to resolve to the new server although I don;t think it's even necessary.

I'm stumped on this one. Anyone have any ideas?

I also want to mention, this happens only if I manually configure the server settings > Microsoft Exchange. If I add the account using the email address, it works fine. I'm using Outlook 2010 ver. 14.0.7106.5003 32bit
